Brain stimulation for hard-to-treat childhood epilepsy spasms

This trial compares two types of brain stimulation—deep brain stimulation (DBS) and vagus nerve stimulation (VNS)—to see which works better for epileptic spasms in children with drug-resistant epilepsy. If your child has not responded to two or more seizure medicines, this study might help find a new way to control their spasms.

Who can take part

  • Your child must be between 5 and 17 years old (not yet 18).
  • They must have epilepsy that doesn't get better with at least two seizure medicines.
  • Their main seizure type must be epileptic spasms or tonic spasms, confirmed by a brain wave test (EEG).
  • You must be able to give written consent and commit to study visits for 1 year.
