This trial tests whether using xylitol dental wipes can lower the risk of bloodstream infections in children with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) who are receiving chemotherapy. If you or your child have AML and will have at least two cycles of chemo that include cytarabine, this study may help reduce infection risk.

Who can take part

  • You are between 1 and 25 years old.
  • You have acute myeloid leukemia (AML) that is either new or has come back.
  • You are scheduled to receive at least two rounds of chemotherapy that includes the drug cytarabine and is expected to cause very low white blood cell counts for 7 days or more.
  • You have at least one tooth that has come through the gums.
  • You agree not to use any other xylitol products (like gum or toothpaste) during the study.
  • You are not allergic to xylitol, grapes, or grape flavoring.
