Who can take part

  • You have been on a breathing machine (ventilator) for more than 48 hours
  • You are 18 years or older
  • You have a new or worsening spot on your chest X-ray and at least two signs of infection (fever, high or low white blood cells, or thick mucus from your lungs)
  • You or your family have agreed to participate, or an emergency process is used
  • You do not have severe pneumonia needing blood pressure medicine or severe low oxygen
  • You do not have a weak immune system from conditions like recent organ transplant, HIV, or long-term high-dose steroids
