Who can take part

  • You are 18 years old or older.
  • You have been intubated (breathing tube placed) for the first time and on a ventilator for less than two weeks.
  • Your level of consciousness is fairly good, with a Glasgow Coma Scale score between 13 and 15.
  • You are not at high risk for swelling of the voice box (laryngeal edema), difficult intubation, or a planned tracheostomy.
  • You have not already pulled out your breathing tube by yourself (self-extubation).
