Timing of IV nutrition in critically ill patients

  • You are 18 years or older
  • You have at least one organ failing (like heart, lungs, or kidneys) within the first day in the ICU
  • Doctors expect you to stay in the ICU for more than 3 days
  • Tube feeding (feeding through a tube) is started within 48 hours of being in the ICU
  • After 3 days, tube feeding provides less than half of the calories you need
