Nicotine's effect on depression in brain imaging study

Who can take part

  • You are between 18 and 65 years old.
  • You have not used any nicotine products (like cigarettes, e-cigarettes, patches, or gum) in the past year, unless you only use them occasionally and can stop for at least a week before the scan.
  • If you have depression: your depression must be your main diagnosis and you must currently be in a major depressive episode with a score of at least 29 on a standard depression rating scale.
  • You cannot be taking medications that affect a brain chemical called acetylcholine, or certain antidepressants.
  • You cannot have serious medical conditions, eye problems like keratoconus, or metal in your body that would prevent an MRI or PET scan.
  • You must not be pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning to become pregnant during the study.
