Who can take part

  • You are between 18 and 80 years old.
  • You are scheduled for a first-time total knee replacement.
  • You will have spinal anesthesia with a specific numbing medicine (ropivacaine).
  • You have not been taking high doses of strong pain pills (like oxycodone) daily for more than 6 months.
  • You are not allergic to common pain and anesthesia medications.
  • Your health status is stable enough to be classified as ASA 1, 2, or 3 (your doctor can confirm).
