Who can take part
- You are between 18 and 75 years old.
- You have esophageal cancer (either squamous cell or adenocarcinoma) that is in the middle or lower part of your esophagus and is at a stage that can be removed by surgery (clinical stage I–III).
- You are already scheduled for a thoracoscopic esophagectomy (keyhole surgery to remove part of the esophagus).
- You are in good enough health overall (ASA score III or lower, and ECOG performance status 0 or 1), meaning you can walk and do daily activities without much trouble.
- Your lung function is adequate (FEV₁ at least 50% of predicted for your age and size).
- You have a BMI less than 30, no severe risk of choking or aspiration, no prior chest surgery that might cause lung scarring, and you are not pregnant or breastfeeding.
