Who can take part

  • Been off a breathing machine (ventilator) for at least 48 hours
  • No current failure of any major organs (like heart, lungs, kidneys)
  • No severe infection in the blood (sepsis)
  • Stable heart rate and blood pressure
  • Any lung infection is under control
  • Blood carbon dioxide level (PCO2) is less than 60 mmHg
  • Patient and family have signed the consent form
