Comparing Two Steps to Remove Tracheostomy in Stroke Patients

Who can take part

  • You had a stroke (ischemic or hemorrhagic) and have a tracheostomy tube.
  • You are stable—off a breathing machine for at least 48 hours, no active serious infection, and your vital signs are okay.
  • You can cough strongly enough (peak cough flow of at least 100 L/min) and have less than 20 ml of secretions under your vocal cords in a day.
  • You do not have severe airway problems like a narrowed windpipe or a hole between windpipe and esophagus.
