Who can take part
- You have cirrhosis and have had bleeding from enlarged veins in your food pipe (variceal bleed).
- You are between 18 and 75 years old.
- You have not taken metformin or certain heart medications (like carvedilol or other beta-blockers) in the last 5 days.
- You do not have severe liver failure (Child-Turcotte-Pugh score of 12 or higher).
- Your bilirubin (a liver marker) is not above 3 mg/dl, and your creatinine (a kidney marker) is not above 1.5 mg/dl.
- You do not have certain conditions like a very slow heart rate, low blood pressure, asthma, heart failure, blood clots in the liver, liver cancer, or severe confusion.
