Who can take part

  • You are 18 years or older
  • You have a small tube in your food pipe (esophageal catheter) as part of your normal care
  • You are expected to be ready for a 'spontaneous breathing trial' (test of your ability to breathe without the machine) soon
  • You do not have severe heart failure requiring a mechanical heart pump
  • You do not have very advanced COPD (chronic lung disease)
  • You are not pregnant and you do not need a heart-lung machine (ECMO)
