Who can take part

  • Your baby must weigh at least 2000 grams (about 4.4 pounds) at birth.
  • Your baby must show signs of breathing difficulty, such as fast breathing, grunting, or needing extra oxygen.
  • Your baby must be less than 6 hours old.
  • Doctors must have decided to provide full life support for your baby.
  • You must give written permission (informed consent) within 6 hours of birth.
  • Your baby must not have a very low umbilical cord blood pH (below 7.20) or severe birth defects.
