Exercise with blood flow restriction for heart failure
Part of Heart & circulation clinical trials.
This trial tests if a special type of exercise, done while lightly restricting blood flow to the arms or legs, can help improve heart function in people with heart failure and a weakened heart pump. If you have heart failure and are planning or already in cardiac rehab, this may be an option.
Summary written for real people, not researchers, by Clin2.
Who can take part
- Your heart's pumping strength is at or below 50% (LVEF ≤ 50%)
- You are eligible for or already in a cardiac rehabilitation program
- You have no medical reason that prevents you from exercising safely
- You are not pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning to become pregnant
- You do not have moderate or severe peripheral artery disease or a recent deep vein clot
- You do not have uncontrolled high blood pressure or severe heart valve disease

This study tests whether exercising with mild arm or leg pressure (to reduce blood flow slightly) helps people with heart failure improve their strength and heart function. It combines this technique with either aerobic exercise like walking or resistance exercises like light weights.
This study tests if a specific type of leg-strengthening exercise (eccentric resistance training) can help people with stable chronic heart failure feel better and move more easily. If you have heart failure and are not in an acute or very severe stage, this might be an option to improve your daily life.
This study tests how a single session of exercise with a special cuff that limits blood flow affects your muscles and blood vessels. It may help people with COPD who have trouble breathing during exercise.
This trial tests a type of exercise that uses a special band to partly cut off blood flow while you work out. It aims to see how this affects your heart function. You must be generally healthy and free from certain medical conditions to take part.
This study tests a new type of exercise that uses a blood-flow restriction cuff to see if it helps people with leg pain from blocked arteries. If you have stable claudication (leg pain when walking) and have been referred to cardiac rehab, you may qualify.
This trial tests if gentle arm exercises with a special blood pressure cuff can help men recover their lung function after heart surgery. It may be an option for those who are stable and ready to follow simple instructions.
