Who can take part
- Must be 18 years or older
- Must be in the ICU with sepsis or a similar severe illness
- For the sepsis group: must have signs like fast breathing, confusion, or low blood pressure due to infection
- Must not have had chemotherapy or radiation for cancer in the last 6 weeks
- Must not be taking certain immune-suppressing medications or high-dose steroids (more than 20 mg of prednisone daily)
- Must not have an autoimmune disease (e.g., lupus, multiple sclerosis), HIV/AIDS, or active hepatitis B or C
