- You are 18 years old or older
- You are admitted to INOVA Fairfax Hospital
- You have been diagnosed with sepsis in the last 48 hours (suspected infection and signs of organ problems)
- You or your legal representative can understand and sign a consent form
- You do not have severe anemia (low red blood cells) or certain heart conditions
- You are not receiving very high doses of certain blood pressure medicines
- You do not have a very low white blood cell count (neutropenia)
- You do not have a pre-existing cognitive impairment (like dementia)
- You are not pregnant
