Who can take part

  • You are 18 years old or older
  • You are admitted to INOVA Fairfax Hospital
  • You have been diagnosed with sepsis in the last 48 hours (suspected infection and signs of organ problems)
  • You or your legal representative can understand and sign a consent form
  • You do not have severe anemia (low red blood cells) or certain heart conditions
  • You are not receiving very high doses of certain blood pressure medicines
  • You do not have a very low white blood cell count (neutropenia)
  • You do not have a pre-existing cognitive impairment (like dementia)
  • You are not pregnant
