Who can take part

  • You have a sudden episode of breathing failure with low oxygen (PaO2/FiO2 ratio 200 or less)
  • Your carbon dioxide level is not too high (PaCO2 45 mmHg or less)
  • You do not have long-term lung failure or need long-term home oxygen
  • You are able to give consent (or a legal representative can)
  • You have not already had CPAP or NIV nonstop for more than 24 hours before the screening visit
  • You are not pregnant and you do not have certain high-risk conditions (like pneumothorax or cardiogenic pulmonary edema)
