Who can take part

  • You are 40 years or older and currently hospitalized for a COPD flare-up
  • Your blood gases show high carbon dioxide with a lower blood pH (acidosis) or doctors found similar breathing severity
  • You are currently needing breathing support and have already been on noninvasive ventilation or high-flow nasal oxygen since admission
  • You speak English well enough for study instructions
  • You do not have very severe acidosis (very low pH), or a significant drop in alertness
  • You are stable enough to avoid urgent breathing tube placement and blood-pressure medicines
