Who can take part

  • Age 18 or older and able to understand what's going on around you.
  • Been on a breathing machine (ventilator) for more than 72 hours (3 days).
  • First try to breathe without the machine was not successful, but doctors think you're ready to try again.
  • No infection with superbugs (multidrug-resistant organisms).
  • No need for special infection isolation (like for COVID-19).
  • Not have a weak immune system (very low white blood cell count).
  • Not be too sedated or drowsy (score above -1 on a sedation scale).
  • No breathing tube through your throat (tracheostomy).
  • No implanted heart devices like a pacemaker or defibrillator.
  • No allergy to the fur on the robotic pet.
