Who can take part

  • Your child must be in the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) and have been on a breathing machine (ventilator) for more than 24 hours.
  • Your child must be older than 1 month (or at least 38 weeks corrected age) and younger than 18 years old.
  • Your child cannot have certain serious lung or heart conditions, like heart disease or a hole in the diaphragm.
  • Your child cannot have had a lung transplant or a stem cell transplant with certain complications.
  • Your child cannot be pregnant or have other conditions like severe obesity, facial surgery in the last 2 weeks, or brain bleeding.
  • Your doctor and family must agree that continued treatment is not considered hopeless.
