Who can take part

  • You must be 18 years or older.
  • You must be on a breathing machine (mechanical ventilator) in the ICU.
  • You cannot be on medications that block muscle movement (neuromuscular blockers).
  • You cannot have conditions that affect how you feel pain, like Guillain-Barré Syndrome or spinal cord injury.
  • You cannot have abnormal body postures that make pain assessments difficult.
  • You must need a procedure called tracheal suctioning (clearing the breathing tube) to be included.
