Who can take part

  • You are 18 years or older.
  • You are scheduled for surgery under general anesthesia with a breathing tube.
  • Your preoperative risk score (ARISCAT) for lung problems after surgery is 26 or higher.
  • You are not pregnant or a new mother (within the first few weeks after childbirth).
  • You do not have severe heart failure, severe irregular heartbeat, or severe lung disease (like emphysema).
  • You can safely receive muscle relaxant medicines and have your breathing temporarily stopped during the surgery.
