Who can take part

  • Scheduled for elective (planned, not emergency) open-heart surgery using a heart-lung machine
  • Surgery involves cutting through the breastbone (median sternotomy) to access the heart
  • Overall health status rated as ASA II or III (relatively stable with controlled medical conditions)
  • No heart attack in the past 3 months
  • No severe lung disease (advanced COPD) or very poor heart function (NYHA Class IV)
  • BMI under 35 kg/m² and no severe liver or kidney disease
