Who can take part

  • You are scheduled to have heart surgery that is not an emergency.
  • You have at least one of these risk factors for stroke: past blood vessel disease in your legs, history of stroke or mini-stroke, kidney problems, diabetes, urgent heart bypass surgery, smoking within the last year, or a weak heart pump (less than 35% pumping strength).
  • You can safely have an MRI (no metal implants, pacemaker, or severe claustrophobia).
  • You are not pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • You do not have dementia or trouble completing simple thinking tasks.
