- You have type 2 diabetes
- Your A1C is between 7.0% and 10.5%
- Your fasting blood sugar is 270 mg/dL or lower
- You have been taking at least 1000 mg of metformin daily for 8 weeks or more
- Your kidney function is good (eGFR of 45 or higher)
- Your liver enzymes (ALT and AST) are not more than 3 times the normal upper limit
