This trial studies how certain chemicals in your body and brain change after a type of back surgery called endoscopic decompression. If you have lumbar spinal stenosis (narrowing of the spine) or a herniated disc and are scheduled for this surgery, you may be able to join.

Who can take part

  • You are between 40 and 90 years old, or between 18 and 40 with a slipped disc (herniated disc) in your lower back.
  • You have a recent MRI scan of your lower back showing either spinal narrowing (stenosis) or a herniated disc.
  • You are scheduled for a minimally invasive (endoscopic) surgical treatment for your condition.
  • You do not have serious inflammatory diseases (like rheumatoid arthritis), uncontrolled diabetes, heart problems, or recent neurological issues.
  • You are not pregnant or nursing, and have not had previous spine surgery at the same level in your lower back.
