Preventing kidney problems in preterm babies with caffeine

This study tests whether giving caffeine to very premature babies can help protect their kidneys as they grow. We will use a special light monitor on the skin to check blood flow to the brain and kidneys.

Who can take part

  • Your baby was born extremely early, between 23 and 29 weeks and 6 days.
  • Your baby is already getting caffeine (a medicine that helps with breathing).
  • Your baby has a small tube already in place for giving medicine or drawing blood, like an umbilical line, PICC line, or arterial line.
  • Your baby does not have a major birth defect of the brain, heart, lungs, or kidneys (except minor kidney widening).
  • Your baby does not have any known genetic or chromosome condition.
  • A parent or guardian who is at least 18 years old can give permission in English or Spanish.
