Helping preterm babies breathe with gentle pressure during surfactant therapy

Who can take part

  • Your baby is born at 32 weeks of pregnancy or later
  • Your baby needs extra oxygen (more than 30% oxygen for over 30 minutes) while on continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) or high-flow nasal cannula
  • Your baby shows signs of hard work breathing even with low oxygen needs
  • Your baby weighs more than 800 grams (about 1 pound 12 ounces) at birth
  • A chest X-ray shows respiratory distress syndrome (RDS)
  • The hospital has all the needed equipment and a correctly sized chest cuirass for your baby
