Who can take part

  • You are between 18 and 75 years old
  • You are scheduled for non-emergency heart surgery that uses a heart-lung machine (such as bypass, valve repair, or aortic surgery)
  • You are considered high-risk for surgery (ASA physical status III or IV)
  • You are able to have a transesophageal echocardiogram (a tube with ultrasound placed in your throat to see your heart)
  • You do not have severe pre-surgery heart weakness (ejection fraction below 30%)
  • You do not have a significant irregular heartbeat (like atrial fibrillation), need a mechanical heart support device, or have conditions that prevent the throat ultrasound (like esophageal problems or bleeding risks)
