Who can take part

  • You are at least 18 years old.
  • You are scheduled for planned (not emergency) heart surgery that uses a heart-lung machine.
  • Your surgery is one of the following: replacing or repairing a heart valve, bypass surgery (CABG), a combination of these, or surgery on the ascending aorta or aortic arch.
  • You have not had this surgery before (it is not a repeat surgery).
  • You do not have any condition that prevents using an ultrasound probe in your esophagus (TEE).
  • You are not critically ill before surgery, such as needing IV heart medications, a balloon pump, or a breathing tube, and you do not have an irregular heartbeat (atrial fibrillation) before surgery.
