Who can take part
- You are 18 years or older
- You have been in the ICU on a breathing machine (ventilator) for at least 24 hours
- Your ICU team is already planning to give a small amount of fluid to check your response
- You do not have a blood clot in your leg veins
- You do not have high pressure in your brain or uncontrolled high blood pressure
- You can lie flat on your back, and your hips have not been replaced or operated on recently
- You are not pregnant
- You do not have serious heart or lung conditions that affect CO2 levels
- Your oxygen levels in your blood are not too low (above 88%)
