Who can take part

  • You are 18 years old or older
  • You are admitted to the ICU and on a breathing machine (ventilator) with a specific breathing setting
  • Doctors suspect you may need more fluids (e.g., low blood pressure, negative fluid balance, or poor circulation)
  • Your heart rhythm is normal sinus rhythm (not atrial fibrillation or other irregular beats)
  • You have an arterial line placed to monitor blood pressure continuously
  • Your doctor can get a clear picture of your heart using a bedside ultrasound (echocardiography)
