This trial compares two strong antibiotics, meropenem (given through a vein) and azithromycin (taken by mouth), to see which one works better for a hard-to-treat type of typhoid fever called XDR (extensively drug-resistant) enteric fever. If you have been diagnosed with XDR typhoid fever, this study aims to find the best treatment option for you.

Who can take part

  • You are between 1 and 70 years old.
  • Your doctor suspects you have XDR enteric fever, or a blood test has confirmed it.
  • If you are a married woman of childbearing age, you must have a negative pregnancy test before joining.
  • You have never had a bad reaction (like a rash or severe allergy) to azithromycin or meropenem.
  • You do not have a history of heart problems with abnormal EKG, or liver issues from past azithromycin use.
  • You are not taking any other medicines that could negatively interact with meropenem or azithromycin.
