Who can take part

  • You have persistent atrial fibrillation (a type of irregular heartbeat that lasts longer than a week)
  • You are scheduled for your first catheter ablation (a procedure to fix the rhythm)
  • Your left atrium (upper heart chamber) is enlarged, as shown on imaging tests
  • You are 18 or older
  • You are not pregnant or breastfeeding
  • You have not had a prior stroke or mini-stroke (TIA)

Extended ablation vs. standard treatment for persistent atrial fibrillation

This trial compares two catheter ablation techniques for people with persistent atrial fibrillation (a type of irregular heartbeat that doesn't go away on its own). It will test whether a more extensive ablation (burning more heart tissue) works better than the standard procedure of isolating the pulmonary veins (the veins that bring blood from the lungs to the heart). If you have this condition and have had at least one episode in the past year, this study might help you find a more effective treatment.
