Sugar metabolism study in obese patients with and without MASLD

Who can take part

  • You are between 35 and 65 years old
  • Your weight has been stable (no big changes) between your first visit and surgery
  • You are willing to have small tissue samples (biopsies) taken from your liver and belly fat during a planned bariatric surgery
  • For the MASLD group: you have a fatty liver diagnosis, and your blood tests show your liver and kidneys are working well enough
  • For the non-MASLD group: you have a BMI of 40 or more, or a BMI of 35 or more with a weight-related health problem, and no fatty liver
  • You are not taking certain diabetes medicines (metformin or SGLT2 inhibitors, insulin, GLP-1 agonists)
