Who can take part

  • You are between 18 and 25 years old
  • You have sickle cell disease and a doctor says you may need a stem cell transplant
  • You need to be in fairly good health, with good blood counts and no major organ problems
  • You can have a transfusion to lower your sickle hemoglobin below 30% before starting
  • You are not pregnant, not breastfeeding, and agree to use two forms of birth control
  • You can stop taking hydroxyurea for at least 30 days before the study
