Who can take part

  • You are 18 years or older and admitted to the ICU.
  • You have acute kidney injury (sudden loss of kidney function).
  • You are receiving continuous kidney replacement therapy (a type of dialysis) for one of these reasons: very high potassium, very low pH or bicarbonate, severe breathing problems with fluid overload, or kidney failure lasting more than 72 hours.
  • You do not have end-stage kidney disease, a kidney transplant, or other conditions that would interfere with the ultrasound test (like liver cirrhosis, severe heart valve problems, or a large belly fluid buildup).
  • You are not pregnant, do not have severe heart rhythm problems, and are not on a heart-lung bypass machine (ECMO).
