Who can take part
- You are in the intensive care unit within 72 hours of heart surgery that used a heart-lung machine
- You have acute kidney injury (a sudden decrease in kidney function) as defined by standard criteria
- You have stable blood pressure and normal capillary refill (blood flow to your skin is good)
- You do not have severe electrolyte imbalances, liver disease, or need for dialysis right away
- You are not allergic to the diuretics furosemide or hydrochlorothiazide
