Who can take part

  • You are in the intensive care unit within 72 hours of heart surgery that used a heart-lung machine
  • You have acute kidney injury (a sudden decrease in kidney function) as defined by standard criteria
  • You have stable blood pressure and normal capillary refill (blood flow to your skin is good)
  • You do not have severe electrolyte imbalances, liver disease, or need for dialysis right away
  • You are not allergic to the diuretics furosemide or hydrochlorothiazide
