Brain stimulation to improve function in frail older adults

Prefrail Elderly

This study uses a gentle, non-invasive brain stimulation technique (called transcranial direct current stimulation, or tDCS) to see if it can improve physical function and daily activities in older adults who are showing early signs of frailty. You will be asked to do some simple exercises and cognitive tasks while receiving or not receiving the stimulation.

Who can take part

  • You are between 65 and 90 years old.
  • You have 1-2 signs of frailty (like unintentional weight loss, weakness, slow walking, low energy, or low activity level).
  • You can understand instructions and communicate clearly (a simple memory test will confirm this).
  • You have not had a stroke in the last 6 months or been hospitalized for any reason in the last 3 months.
  • You do not have serious nervous system disorders, epilepsy, heart problems, or uncontrolled high blood pressure.
  • You do not have metal implants in your head (like a pacemaker or cochlear implant) and do not have a history of severe headaches.
