Balloon dilation during esophageal cancer surgery

Delayed Gastric Conduit Emtpying (DGCE)Minimally-invasive Esophagectomy

This trial tests whether expanding a balloon inside the esophagus during keyhole surgery can reduce a serious complication called anastomotic leak. If you have esophageal cancer and are scheduled for a minimally invasive Ivor Lewis esophagectomy, you may be eligible.

Who can take part

  • You must be 18 years or older.
  • You have been diagnosed with esophageal cancer (confirmed by a biopsy).
  • You are planning to have a minimally invasive Ivor Lewis esophagectomy with the goal of curing the cancer.
  • You have not had any previous surgery on your esophagus or stomach.
  • You are able to understand and sign a consent form.
