Active surveillance for Bethesda IV thyroid nodules

This study is testing whether it is safe to simply monitor (watch closely) a small thyroid nodule that has a certain biopsy result (Bethesda IV) instead of removing it right away. You would not receive a treatment, but would have regular checkups and ultrasounds to see if the nodule changes.

Who can take part

  • You are 30 years old or older.
  • You have a single thyroid nodule that a biopsy found to be a 'follicular neoplasm' or 'suspicious for follicular neoplasm' (Bethesda category IV).
  • The nodule is smaller than 2 centimeters (about 0.8 inches) in every direction.
  • Your thyroid ultrasound shows the nodule is low or intermediate risk (EU-TIRADS 3 or 4).
  • You do not have signs that the nodule may have spread (such as suspicious lymph nodes, irregular shape, or growth outside the thyroid).
  • You have not had thyroid surgery before, do not have high calcium, are not pregnant, and can give consent.
