Who can take part

  • You have essential hypertension (high blood pressure with no known cause).
  • If you are not on blood pressure medicine, your average sitting systolic blood pressure must be between 140 and 179 mmHg.
  • If you are on blood pressure medicine, your average sitting systolic blood pressure must be between 130 and 179 mmHg.
  • You must be able to stop your current blood pressure medicine temporarily during the study.
  • Your blood pressure cannot be 180/110 mmHg or higher at the start of the study.
  • You cannot have high blood pressure caused by another condition (like kidney disease or tumors).
