New blood pressure medicine for people with high blood pressure

Who can take part

  • You have high blood pressure (essential hypertension, meaning no other disease is causing it).
  • Your blood pressure must be measured in a certain range (systolic between 140 and 179, diastolic between 60 and 109) at the first visit.
  • If you are already on blood pressure medicine, your systolic must be below 180 and diastolic below 110.
  • You cannot have taken more than 3 different blood pressure medications in the past 3 months.
  • You must not have any serious heart, brain, kidney, liver, or eye problems, or uncontrolled diabetes or gout.
