Who can take part
- You have rectal cancer (confirmed by biopsy) and are scheduled for low anterior resection (surgery to remove part of your rectum) using laparoscopic or robotic techniques.
- Your tumor is located within about 6 inches (15 cm) of the anus.
- You are in generally good health, with an ECOG performance status of 0, 1, or 2 (able to care for yourself and do daily activities with little or no help).
- You do not have other serious health problems or a history of abdominal surgery that would make minimally invasive surgery unsafe.
- You have not had treatment for any cancer (including colorectal) in the last five years, and you do not have inflammatory bowel disease or a hereditary colorectal cancer syndrome.
- You are not needing emergency surgery for a bowel blockage or a hole in the bowel.
