Who can take part

  • You are 18 years or older and scheduled for your first open-heart surgery (using a heart-lung machine and cutting through the breastbone).
  • You do not have a diagnosed psychiatric disorder and are not taking medications for mood or anxiety (psychotropic drugs).
  • You do not have any endocrine disorder (like Addison's or Cushing's) and are not taking corticosteroid medications.
  • You are able to hear the guided meditation instructions and understand the study procedures.
  • You are expected to be in good physical health aside from the heart condition (ASA I or II) and will have a normal consciousness after surgery.
