Testing markers in body fluids for lung injury in children

Who can take part

  • Your child must be diagnosed with acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), a serious lung condition.
  • Your child must be between 1 month and 18 years old.
  • Your child must need a breathing machine (ventilator) to help them breathe.
  • We need to collect samples of saliva and fluid from the lungs (called BAL) within 24 hours of diagnosis.
  • A parent or legal guardian must sign a consent form.
  • Your child cannot have long-term lung disease, a weak immune system, active cancer, or severe birth defects that make survival unlikely.
