Who can take part

  • You must be between 40 and 75 years old.
  • You must have a history of smoking at least 10 pack-years (for example, smoking 1 pack a day for 10 years) and have quit for at least 1 month before the study.
  • You must have moderate to severe COPD confirmed by a breathing test showing FEV1/FVC less than 0.7 and FEV1 between 30% and 80% of normal.
  • You must not have used any nicotine products (like patches or gum) in the past month.
  • You must not have had a COPD flare-up in the last month that required steroids by mouth or IV, and you must not have certain heart problems or other serious illnesses.
  • You must be able to give written consent and follow study procedures.
