Who can take part

  • You must be on a breathing machine (ventilator) for less than 72 hours due to low oxygen levels.
  • You need to have a small tube in your artery and another in a large vein to monitor your blood gases.
  • You must be in the intensive care unit (ICU) at Massachusetts General Hospital.
  • You cannot be pregnant, breastfeeding, or a prisoner.
  • You cannot have certain heart or lung conditions, like a recent blood clot in the lung or very weak heart function.
  • You must not be on certain other lung medications 24 hours before joining the trial.
