Who can take part

  • You are 18 years or older.
  • You have a condition called neurogenic lower urinary tract dysfunction (NLUTD), which affects bladder control.
  • You have used a catheter (a thin tube to drain urine) for at least 6 months.
  • You live at home, not in a hospital or nursing home.
  • You have tried bladder washes with lactobacillus, gentamicin, or both.
  • Or, you are a caregiver for someone who meets these requirements and you have helped them with these bladder washes.

This study tests whether washing the bladder with a solution called chlorhexidine (a germ-killer) can lower the number of unplanned hospital visits and improve quality of life for people who have a long-term suprapubic catheter. You may be eligible if you have had a catheter for at least a year and have had a recent urinary tract infection.
