Who can take part

  • You must be 65 years or older.
  • You are scheduled for a planned (not emergency) major abdominal surgery, such as colorectal, liver, pancreas, or stomach surgery.
  • Your physical health status should be ASA II or III (moderate to serious health condition, but stable).
  • You cannot have a known allergy to local anesthetics or a bleeding disorder that prevents a nerve block.
  • You cannot have severe liver, kidney, or heart failure, or take strong pain medications daily for chronic pain.
